  1. BioSphere 2 or BS2 is an ecological test 
  2. project. It is jokingly known as a "planet in
  3. a bottle", and is situated in Arizona, USA. 
  4. Under a sealed glass dome, several different 
  5. habitats are recreated, with representatives
  6. of nearly 4,000 species, including between
  7. 1991 and 1993, eight humans, to see how well
  8. air, water, and waste can be recycled in an 
  9. enclosed environment and whether a stable 
  10. ecosystem can be created. The sealed area 
  11. covers a total of 3.½ acres and contains 
  12. tropical rainforest, salt marsh, desert, 
  13. coral reef, and savanna habitats, as well as
  14. a section for intensive agriculture. The 
  15. people within are entirely self-sufficient,
  16. except for electricity, which is supplied by
  17. a 3.7 megawatt power station on the outside
  18. as solar panels were considered too expensive
  19. for this test project. Experiments with 
  20. biospheres that contain relatively simple 
  21. life forms have been carried out for decades,
  22. and a 21-day trial period in 1989 that 
  23. included humans preceded the construction of
  24. BS2. However, BS2 is not in fact the second 
  25. in a series: the Earth is considered to be 
  26. BioSphere 1. The cost of setting up and 
  27. running the BS2 project has been 
  28. estimated at $110 million, some of which 
  29. will be covered by visitors, who can
  30. view the inhabitants through the geodesic 
  31. glass dome. To date the only  major problem
  32. has been in maintaining satisfactory oxygen
  33. levels, which in 1993 became so erratic 
  34. that additional oxygen had to be pumped in.

  36. Update: In November1996 it was officially
  37. announced that the BS2 project was a failure
  38. due to condensation building up on the thick
  39. wall, thus making it a haven for cockroaches
  40. and rats etc.
